On this blog, it’s true that we’re almost always giving a positive vision of India. But of course, this crazy country is far from being a safe and smooth ride everyday and we have to struggle more than often. It’s sometimes pretty difficult to avoid the nervous breakdown… We knew that before choosing to settle down in Bangalore, so we try to keep some distance and zen with everything happening here.
It’s not exacly what this post is all about but this weekend wasn’t an easy one. We wanted to get out of Bangalore (even if we weren’t in full shape), so we picked Mysore, 150 kms away, a good and easy road-trip opportunity. We already went to Mysore 7 years ago but didn’t come back since we live in Bangalore.
After the usual traffic to exit Bangalore, we took a secondary road (Kannakapura) unfortunately full of crazy trucks and buses. We finally had a flat which is never a problem here but caused us a big fear as it happened suddenly while we were overtaking a truck at 80 kms/h and the bike was very difficult to handle… But the Royal Enfield is true to its reputation and pretty stable. We were finally able to stop on the side and we pushed it to the next “puncher” shop who did a great job pretty fast.
Finally, arriving in Mysore in late afternoon, we barely had time to visit the city before dark. By chance, we stumbled upon the light and sound show at the Palace. But our patience being limited we didn’t stay until the end of the show which was in Kannada language and pretty boring… Except that they were full lighting the palace at the end, something we, of course, missed. At least we had a few beers in a pretty nice ambiance at the Parklane Hotel in the evening with some friends passing by the city as well.
But the best was to come. Stopping next to the same old-fashioned hotel we stayed in 7 years ago, we decided to take a room there, Dasaprakash Hotel. Except this time, when we came back to sleep, cockroaches were all over the place and our bed infested with bedbugs. Cockroaches are not really a problem, at least they don’t bite… but bedbugs!? It was impossible to sleep. We finally changed of room at 2am. On top of that, one of us was also more and more sick. The rest of the night wasn’t better, the non-stop voices coming from the corridor weren’t helping neither.
So after a brief hesitation, we packed everything and were hitting the road on our way back at 11am, crashing miserably at Taco Bell in Bangalore for lunch… A hot shower, a siesta, a home-made soup and back to bed, finally, we’re not that bad at home!

With a friend, Venkat, we’re cycling to our office once in a while even if it’s quite difficult to appreciate those 13 kms with the insane traffic, the bad roads and the pollution. Still, this little exercise has allowed us to see that we’re not the only fools to cycle in this crazy city. Of course, nothing has been planned here to motivate people to cycle even if that could be one of the best solution to halt the unbridled development of traffic throughout the city. I heard that they have well-respected bicycle lanes in Pune, so why not in Bangalore?

Anyway, beyond those urban planning problems, we think that cyclists are also great photographic subjects (I’m particularly fond of the “roadster” cycles, like the old Raleigh kind of bikes) and meeting them is the insurance of great anecdotes. So we’ve decided to start shooting cyclists of Bangalore (with our smartphones) and chat a bit with them about why they cycle or anything else (a good way to remember that, actually, not everyone is speaking English).

We’re sharing those pictures on a Facebook page and on an Instagram account, “Cyclists of Bangalore“, so feel free to follow us, like, comment and spread the word!

Lost in the plane!

Johanne, proud of her new status of “entrepreneur” had to change of visa recently. As the change of visa is not an easy task at the scary FRRO, she has chosen to take advantage of the situation by doing a quick trip in France.
As the employment visa is coming with many rules, with the most difficult one being to earn a minimum of $25 000 per year and that our small company, TITRI is just at the beginning of its life, Johanne opted for the “business visa“. The problem is that for French citizens and without a time exemption, you have to get out of the country every 30 days with a business visa.
So, it’s true that we wanted to visit the very near Sri Lanka, that we couldn’t wait to check wether Singapore was as exciting as Hong-Kong and that it’s too silly not to also see Japan, Burma, Philippines or Maldives while in Bangalore. Everything will be accelerated now. At least, we’re going to start with Sri Lanka as it’s the cheapest gateway from Bangalore (and it’s even cheaper from Chennai).
But of course, all those trips are still going to cost us a lot, so we won’t be able to sustain this life style very long. We’ll see what happen and will let you know here or on our other travel blog “On The Road Again“, so stay tuned.

(the picture here is coming from our on-going photo series “I like to fall” where Johanne has to show her feet in interesting environments. We find this fun and quite nice, check out the rest of the series here)
